There are official accounts for Jeb, Bill, Bob, and Valentina. They were made by staff (which I think was still Squad at the time) years ago for the purpose of making announcements like this, though they are seldom used. So yes, it's real.

Okay. Great! Does this mean that the forum is not shutting down any time soon?

Hey Everyone,

We wanted to share the news that we will be upgrading the KSP forums in the coming month. ...please know we read the forums, check your comments, and watch your videos. The game means a lot to us, and we want to make sure that our next steps with Kerbal Space Program are done with the care that it deserves.

I'd be happy to have my science related posts that are currently hidden in the archived KerbalEDU part of the forum moved to an appropriate place in the 'updated' forum :-)

Also, @Valentina Kerman nice to hear from you & fyi...just i case it might align someday with the interests of the new KSP owners...the TGdesk IP/platform created by the former Marko Kärkelä (TeacherGaming LLC) (sadly SARS-CoV-2 epidemic put them out of business) once used for KerbalEDU (1.4.5) was a remarkable platform for 'multi user' licenses (i.e. licenses that allow for 'any student to use' such as in schools).  An instructor could make & launch a presentation to introduce a KerbalEDU project, then open the project & tracking 'student' activity/progress inside not only KerbalEDU but many other EDU related  'games/simulators'.  Instructor created 'Class portals' made Student 'in game' progress visible to a coach/instructor as milestones were met during the KerbalEDUproject...I would love to have such tools again...for anyone curious, here are a few screenshots from the pre 2021 era when that KerbalEDU 1.4.5 platform was active: https://photos.app.goo.gl/3aX3XBFX7hjkTGDD7

Hopefully "upgrade" in this context doesn't mean "change to a completely different platform". I remember when Bethesda did that with the Elder Scrolls forums, completely killed the community basically overnight.

Yeah, hopefully its some maintenance things and nothing big and bad like an entire change like Bethesda. Besides, I'd be worried about the migration over being not worth people's time (with the idea that the migration takes NONE of the accounts or posts or anything with it) and it killing what's left.

Hey Everyone,

We wanted to share the news that we will be upgrading the KSP forums in the coming month. This will mean that the forum will be offline for up to a day, and you might notice some technical hiccups here and there when you log back in.  We will follow up with a more detailed timeline soon.

Kerbal has been a bit quiet recently, but please know we read the forums, check your comments, and watch your videos. The game means a lot to us, and we want to make sure that our next steps with Kerbal Space Program are done with the care that it deserves.

Thanks

IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!

Its also the first post than any of the OG 4 Kerbals have made in the forum (member list sorted by reputation score).

KSP 2 will receive updates, I take it. A fixed KSP 2 is well deserved in my opinion. Unknowingly how much of a hinder the NDA will be in this regards, don't disappoint me. I actually expect the full roadmap to be implemented with it's original vision and not a alternate vision. No one tells me whether it's unrealistic or not, lemme dream.

Oh oh oh, are we going off the rails on the hype train already? All aboard???

I'm excited by this news purely because it means someone is going to look after the forums! I was super scared that we would lose this site in the near future and if I get one more 503 gateway error I am going to RUD my PC with a baseball bat.

That said, idk where the IP will go next. KSP2 has major baggage technically, publicly, etc. Most of the amazing KSP/KSP2 devs and modders still active around here are now involved in some capacity with KSA development. KSP1 is fantastic, but incredibly old. If I were a publisher and I needed to make money to at least make it worth my while, I'm not sure what I would do. Options seem like:

  • KSP3? Sounds very high risk/high reward, and with potential competition that already has experience in the niche genre from KSA I'd be weary.
  • KSP2 development? Maybe, but that would be a massive uphill battle and would require significant time building off of the abandoned work of others. I don't think there's much more money to be made there.
  • KSP1 DLC? Another maybe, but what can they offer that mods don't already solve?
  • KSP1 remaster? Again, now you are competing with over a decade of free mods.
  • LEGO spin-off? Something tells me LEGO is fine eating the cost of that loss and won't want to follow through on reviving the project to completion.

So yeah, oof. I guess starting at the forums is at least a smart and cheap move to help us out! Idk what will happen from there, but I'm glad we at least still have KSP and an active modding community to keep me busy for another decade while they figure this all out.
