I did a test launch after building the craft to make sure I'd built it correctly, and cut off the Agena when my Ap was 500km. Lo and behold, my lunar DN was coming up, and the timing was perfect-ISH to get an encounter, so I quickly just made a node 1 minute ahead and got an encounter. Since this was a hack job and I wasn't even intending to actually go to the Moon, my trajectory was meh, so I cheated myself a 3rd ignition on the Agena for a single MCC to get the landing trajectory you see in the video. This was highly illegal and the mission would have failed if I was using EngineIgnitor but alas I was not and thus I have cheated badly. Ish, maybe, idk. The video is totally raw and unedited, so you'll want to skip. Overheating indicators were unexpected. The video starts at a quicksave point I made on the 1st attempt, and this is attempt #5 from the quicksave spot. The numbers can never be used by another human since this mission is incredibly sensitive to velocity and angle and lunar wind direction. Impact velocity is 45m/s ... survivable but should have been better. The only mission less fun than this one is Pioneer 1. Reveal hidden contents I finally completed a successful Ranger 5 Rough Lander mission! Your suggestions were a big help. I backed off the thrust on the BE-3 solid to 24. That gave me a much smoother burn and for a longer period. My landing velocity was just under 140 m/s with the motor burning out at about 300 m altitude. I was probably at the limits of the lander to survive, but it did. Spoiler I went with the Atlas Agena B for my booster this time. It made no difference to the landing, but I wanted to go more traditional. Cool shot taken just after Agena TLI SECO above Hawaii. Got in a cool Hullcam VDS photo on the way down. I had a much shallower trajectory this time. Ranger 5 is now lined up for final approach. Retro fire began at 40 k using the midcourse engine and the RCS. Highest velocity on the way down was about 1200 m/s. Lander separation was clean. The final landing burn with the BE-3 started at 6,000 m. The sphere decoupled at about 290 m. Landing was hard but survivable. It rolled for a bit and came to rest against a large rock. Success! Ranger 5 took seismometer readings and transmitted them back to JPL. I may have just got lucky here, but it seems like a good result. This will remain a very tough mission to accomplish.

That part of the trip was definitely just for me.

I believe that this mission is impossible with KSP/BDB, but I would love to be proved wrong! Yeah, in KSRSS from the Cape, this one ain't gonna happen. It's at least a few hundred m/s short. I am currently not fluent in direct ascent from the Cape with the inclination mode set to Default. If I'm not mistaken it can only be done once a month with a very small launch window at night. There was a time when I didn't know how to get to an equatorial geosynchronous orbit either, and I do now, so maybe there's hope for direct ascent. I also know that even with Default inclination, the relationship between the moon and the earth in KSRSS can't be precisely correct without axial tilt, so that makes me a little meh about direct ascent missions in KSP. That said, Pioneer 4 is entirely possible in JNSQ. I just tried 3 times and was able to get to a munar PE of 800k, so it would just take some tweaking to the timing/ascent angle to get it closer. But I did get to escape velocity, and my solar orbit was lower, so I'm calling that one a ... whatevs. Also, check out this old NASA video of the Pioneer 4 launch, around 50 seconds. Interesting - might need to bury some prograde RCS jets in the bottom of the guidance unit ... someday ... if I ever try this again Spoiler

First order of business is doing This. BEHOLD, THE SANDBAR. A skylabish monstrosity. And after a fair bit of physics wrangling, a few launches and a few days of building, its self construction begins. The station of the future, one that builds ITSELF (with the assistance of a crew of three horribly overworked engineers). Featuring its first module, the very first in the long long radio telescope/relay system. For scanning the nearby star Cercani for any signs of life and for communicating with probes I MOST DEFINITELY did NOT overestimate the communications power on. Now featuring Gyazo links that won't 404 within the week.

Download it from Github here and put everything that is inside the Gamedata folder inside your ksp install Gamedata folder. Also don't forget on getting a 2.5x / 2.7x planet pack like JNSQ or KSRSS, otherwise the parts will be overpowered as they are made for a bigger system. However since one of our dependencies B9Partswitch has not has its metadata updated you need to set CKAN's compatible game versions to allow from 1.12.0 onwards rather than just 1.12.5. You can do this from CKAN>Settings>Compatible Game Versions. The other thing that could block an install is if you have already installed an incompatible mod. For BDB that would be Magpie Mods, you should remove that if you have it.

To be clear, BDB parts are balanced the same as Stock parts. However, Stock parts themselves are technically overpowered for a vanilla scale Kerbin, so if you want a more realistic performance for the historical BDB rocket builds you need to run an upscaled planet pack. That said, nothing is forcing you to build only historical rockets with BDB parts!

Copy all the things inside that into the Gamedata folder of your Kerbal install. Then launch the game - that's it! Your Gamedata should have all those folders/files, plus the ones from Squad (Squad and SquadExpansion, I believe?) BorfoandShnogs
Hello! This might not be a Bluedog related issue, but my BDB engines are affected by this issue so I am coming here for help. All of my modded engines get worse with each engine configuration. For example, My F-1CW engine, although the stats in the config selector say that it has more isp and thrust than every other F-1 configuration, the base F-1 config ends up being the most powerful F-1 config even though its stats say that it's the weakest variant. It's like this with every mod I have that adds engines. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you and how have you fixed it? Thanks in advance!
