Just had a w-t-f moment at mcdonalds. Inflation is wild yall. 2 egg mcmuffins and 3 hash browns just cost me $15.21!! Thats $8.38 for the 2 egg mcmuffins and $5.67 for 3 hash browns. Mcdonalds is actively pricing themselves out of business. 3-4 years ago this same order would have been under $10.

Don’t get me started on crypto. It’s a big scam, and the stupid manosphere pushes it on anyone they can get.

It's not a scam, it's a particularly virile simulacrum in an age of simulacra. It's not like the "proper' financial assets are that much more grounded.

The Western manosphere meanwhile is just into all things alternative, and crypto used to be it before the regulators clamped down on it in the late 2010s - early 2020s. Now most if not all exit-entry points to the cryptosphere are under proper AML/CTF surveillance. As always, these guys are behind the times.

A couple of years ago my kids asked me what cryptocurrency was for. I said, "People pretend that it is an alternate currency system, but mostly they just use it to get real money."

But, on the other hand, when bitcoin first came to my attention I could have bought 1 bitcoin for less than a dollar. If I had bought $100 worth of it then, and held it until now, I'd be a multi-millionaire. I certainly wish I would have let myself be scammed into it at that point.

Tragic fact: he almost did it right, as it appears.

Apparently the implosion happened by the failure of the **GLUE** that kept the carbon fiber hull and the titanium caps tied together. Assuming this is true, the glue may had been weakened by the Sun's heat while being towed.

Previously, they used a bigger ship and the sub were used to be transported protected from the direct Sun light.

Didn't found the article I had read, but found this instead:

Spoiler

More.

The rationale is horrendously gruesome. In the spoiler...

Spoiler

Had the hull crushed, they would had found pulverized human remains in both caps. Apparently, they found remains only on the front cap, suggesting that the failure happened on the rear cap.

I have 2 work laptops. One is older, on Windows 10, and among other nice things has 2 video ports (HDMI and VGA) so I can easily use 2 monitors without any fuss. The other is Windows 11, and spends 99.9% of the time turned off and the other 0.01% of the time booted up once a month to log onto the network so the big corporation I work for can check a checkbox somewhere that says I didn't lose it.

Seems a lot of my coworkers are in a similar boat, so they told us we should return one of the laptops and just keep the better one to do our work. Now, their definition of "better" is different than mine, so I had to go through several loops to be allowed to keep my Windows 10 laptop, and return instead the Windows 11 laptop that I don't want.

Then 3 days later, they go "okay your laptop is really old, we're going to send you a new one. When you get it, return that old dinosaur to us."

Seeing the thread we're in, you can guess what the new laptop is like.

The front cap is the one with the window, right?

i made money on crypto. half my current rig was paid for with it. granted when etherium went proof of stake i no longer could do any mining. i was just too late to get in on the ground floor. bitcoin requires asics and none of the other mineable currencies filled in the gap like i had predicted. i think thats why gpu manufacturers put out the current generation of power hogs to throw a monkey wrench in the works. my 2070 super was getting about $5 bucks a day and only pulling about a hundred watts. then it became 300 watts for half a dollar a day (on raven coin).

I would say, the undership was doomed before it dove, but it's no need to start a conspiracy discussion.

you dont need a conspiracy when physics decides you are an idiot. it will just crush your hull and go about its business.

Some UIs are impressively bad.  I'm trying to enroll in a community college but the UI just makes no sense.  No sense at all.  I haven't the foggiest clue which of the innumerable branches and buttons does what, let alone how to actually use them for anything remotely useful or even informational.  I'm guessing these UIs rear their ghastly unnavigable heads after a long period of feature creep and bad practices, in the same way as spaghetti code?

I think it's a twofold thing:

  1. There are too many people who know the current UI to change it, but the need to add new things causes them to get crammed in wherever they fit.
  2. As systems get older, programmers leave and are replaced and the new programmers either don't get the original paradigm or don't like it enough to put their new stuff in a different place.

Together these things cause confusing setups where you have to go through 8 menus to do something you do every day, but options you never need to change are on the main menu taking up space.

I work with this kind of software daily and it drives me nuts.
