New mods have dried up

Souptime

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen many new mods on here, just requests, In fact kottabos couldn't upload a ksp vid this week because of that. Looks like there's a dry spell

Modders, promote your mods here! lest make this subforum wet again!

also i have checked the add on development subforum, but i can only see either updated mods or continued mods, i used to see loads of new mods popping up

It's normal. Most part of additional functionality or design features is provided by existing highly developed and grown mods.
So, it's hard to make anything new and comparable. On the other hand, a grown mod requires a lot of efforts to support.

So, like irl. There are not many new aircraft manufacturers. Mostly two of them.

I guess, if/when KSP-2 gets released, its first mods will be ported from the existing ones, so the situation will unlikely get changed.

Kattobos hasnt looked at my mods?  Either or both the tech trees sould make a good couple of episodes.  Simplex Resources too.

Also,  i have a list of ideas that I've requested over the years,  but noone was willing to pick them up or they eventually got made.

Modding is a combination of skills, time,  percieved need and desire.  These have to come together quite specifically.

I think while the other three are obviously key, this one is the reason few new mods get released.

Modder gets an idea, does a little research, oh that other mod is almost exactly what i was going to do.   So they either drop the idea, or help the original modder if possible.

I've been on and off KSP for several years, but from a gameplay perspective, it's never been a better time to play.  While the number of new mods may be slowing down, the quality of mods that are under development is really amazing and modders work to get mods to interact fairly seamlessly is great.  As @ssd21345 pointed out, there's a lot of mods in those lists that kottabos hasn't reviewed.  Having gone through many of his videos when starting again, there are also a lot of mods that have had substantial updates.  If he's looking for ideas, he can always review how some of the long-term actively developed mods have evolved over the years.

@theJesuit Kottabos very likely has a preference or filter to what kinds of mods qualify to be reviewed by him. I can't accurately describe it but the main thing is that it has to deliver some amount of tangible content that adds to the universe, like parts, planets and KK bases. That said, he does review plugin mods like autopilots and things that add to the HUD/UI. But there isn't much juice to be squeezed (or much interest to be had by him) in mods for tech trees and resource placement, moreover, if it's a mod that's pretty empty by itself and needs other mods to complete it, he's less likely to touch it. He seems lazy or resistant to install complementary or dependency mods (such as when he reviewed Universal Storage but most of its parts actually don't appear without a life support mod installed too).

The best way to get his attention is with plane parts or ringed planets.

@hemeac Kottabos has made clear that he'll never re-review a mod. He's fearful of the can of worms that this leads into-- that he'll get pestered to re-review mods every time they have a major update. There is a potential exception to this rule: If it gets adopted and then has a major update by the new owner he might re-review it.
