Well my thing is nowhere as good, or as functional.

We still want to see!

There's a large range of considerations when it comes to carriers. We're all just trying out designs here, and sharing results. Don't be afraid to ask questions. I have no trade secrets - I'll gladly share any of the techniques I used, if you think they'd help you. I think you'll find the same for others.

Alright, mind you that it wasn't very functional, but here are a few pictures.

This was the final, smaller variant which had no storage deck or many fancy things but it worked without sending my PC to the shadow realm, so that was a good thing about it.

That's pretty fancy in my book. The low detail of the screenshots makes it a bit difficult to appreciate fully, but it looks like you put a good bit of work on the command island.

I notice you chose to use wing sections. That likely makes it a lot lighter than something out of Mk3 sections, like most of us do. Does it have a tendency to lift off when you get a bit of speed? How do you power it? What are the blue-ish domes fore and aft of the island? We crave details! C'mon, sell this baby to us.

Well here it goes (full size image)

Screenshot-302

i did make it out of wing sections, and I intentionally turned down the resolution and all fancy settings to allow my PC to not die.

The screenshots are quite small possibly because I didn't use imgur for them and they're not in their native 1920x1080 Resolution

It's got a full keel, structural frame and armor belt. It's fully electric and is powered by 2 Prometheus Reactors from the Near Future Electrical mod.

It's designed to be a Forward Attack Carrier, @ColdJ, hence the Destroyer-esque main guns, CIWS systems, Radars, Sonar, Anti-aircraft missiles, Interceptor Missiles and Anti-aircraft guns (the main guns are dual purpose).

I added this as in a combat situation, you may not always have the luxury of having multiple escort vessels which solely defend you, they will at some point move far away to leave you vulnerable and you don't want to drop a big ordinance quite near your carrier.

@swjr-swis, this hunk of junk can lug ahead at a comfy 80m/s (not joking) using 6 waterjets from a mod I forgot the name of. It doesn't exactly fly, but if you crash into it, the parts have a tendency to exit the Sol's SOI. Usually, it's heavy enough that the craft can't take off, and I think that's for best, so far.

First carrier with a wooden deck I've seen.

Only because ship building had already moved towards metal hulls before projected air power was even a concept. If'n those slackers would've hurried up and figured out (so arrogant to call it 'invented') the mechanics and potential of flight earlier, we might've seen the first aircraft carriers made of wood.

This is a simple carrier I threw together using Angel-125's keel sections. First carrier with a wooden deck I've seen.

Wonder how many Goliaths it would take to make it airbourne?

I tried to use the mod in 1.12.2 with my other mods... It didn't start up at all for some reason.

That is why I never rush in to new iterations of anything (especially KSP) if I can help it. But if you can provide the log from when your game tried to load it to Angel-125 on the thread I am about to give you then maybe they can identify your issue.

I tried something a bit foolhardy, and it worked.

I simply loaded it onto my usual 1.11.2 game and it worked flawlessly, a bit too flawlessly in fact... You might like this.

Yes, those are full sized Bismarck main turrets, not the smaller version.

Paging @ColdJ and @swjr-swis,

I may have made something, rather nippy so to say.

Well this looks good, doesn't it?

Also I'm working on a more mechanical means of propulsion for the newer ship I have in mind.

Those blades spin so quickly my game just renders them as absolutely still, so that's a success in my book (you can see that they are moving by right clicking on an elevon-propeller blade and see the indicator spin around really quickly).

Been there and watched spinning elevons flying about looking unattached. Right back when I started doing submarines I converted some very nice screw blade propellers from (if I remember rightly) Retro Future. Since loss and then slow recovery of my computer I forgot all about them. Will have to go looking, They will need firespitter I believe. I don't get what you did on your top shot, if you were going to put a deck above your gun deck, just duplicate the lower deck and then flip it upside down after attachment. Would like to see you finish your destroyer. If you have Grounded Modular Vehicles I can give you some configs For the containers and their bases to use as building blocks.

Would a space aircraft carrier count?

Maybe I’ll add new badges for anyone who can get a working carrier to Lathe or Eve. No hacks here though, has to be fully launched.

I was looking through my screenshots and came across this from a few years ago, I present Seaship III and the PL-32 Electric Tinamou:

Vf78UWk.png

I don't know where we landed on VTOL craft as far as counting for the challenge goes, but that's what I have here. The smaller planes can land on it too, but as pictured they came like that out of the hangar. The flight deck has a flap on the front which both assisted with the takeoff and landing of aircraft and also acted as a loading ramp so I could use it to move a large rover between islands on Laythe (at least in theory, I never got it to work right). The carrier's powered by 3 goliaths and is designed to hydroplane so it is/was actually pretty fast for it's size. The VTOL was broken by a breaking ground update. I was pretty sure the carrier bought it then too but now that I'm thinking of it, it might still work. Definitely more hassle than it's worth, though.

I gave it a stab, took a few tries but when I did finally manage to stick a landing, the plane bounced off some ten seconds later.

I definitely need a bigger boat, though at 112 parts the one in the video is at the limit of practicality. I could resort to Tweakscale (and have) but I think I'll just repurpose carriers for smaller drones instead...

Will definitely try again. It was fun ;)

The action starts at around 3:33
