Just like Todd said. They don't need to optimize, you people just need better pcs

Dunno who Todd is but at some point you need to pony up the cash to upgrade your potato no matter how well optimized a game is.

It is always possible to complete the game on a weak computer. On YouTube or Twitch.

Not for long.

Do you like it as a FPS RPG or as a space exploration game?

Hm - good question.  Like Skyrim, it delivers on both fronts, but so far the exploration part seems quite a bit stronger than the RPG part (IMO), where I would say Skyrim was weighted in the other direction.

I'm perhaps not far enough along in the game to really weigh in on that one.

Todd's the dude that made the decision that it was OK for a shooting-driven game in 2023 to run at 30fps on Series X by putting priority on eye candy (his words).  The problem with 30fps is that you need to stop moving to see that eye candy or it's a juddery mess.  His response to fan outcry was essentially the financially privileged equivalent of "get gud".

You can generally play a game like Kerbal at low FPS without significant impact, though 30 is getting down there.  Any game where part of the core mechanic is to quickly assess, aim and react should be tuned for better responsiveness.  Looking through reviews and forums, it's absolutely the primary criticism of an otherwise really great game.

It's hardly a space exploration where the planets are limited on how far you can walk, the encounters are pretty much identical every time, and there's no other means of transport other than your ship which you can't really control near the surface. Starfield is just an (unoptimized for a full release) RPG set in space.

I smell some bitterness and some inflated expectations. The moment they didn't mention land vehicles, and didn't show any flying scenes, it was a bit obvious that it was gonna be another gamebryo CPG game but with a space related setting.

I've personally been having a blast. AwwvWh6.png

Btw we do need a Starfield thread it seems.

On the contrary, I never expected anything more than I described in the last sentence. That said, I never planned to play. But it's nice to see how some people were overhyped (again) and faced the Bethesreality.

I will say since we’re drifting off topic a bit that it does give KSP2 the opportunity to actually be a lot of the things Starfield isn’t because of that real-physics continuity from surface to surface. It’ll depend a great deal on how rewarding and fun the science system is and how experiment mechanics enhance that experience of exploration.

Most people were not expecting a spaceflight simulator. Thus most people wasn't disappointed. In fact reviews are very positive bar some criticisms to the writing, some "the game is not easy enough" concerns, and the 30 fps thing on consoles. I would place it a bit on the "doesn't justify hardware requirements with looks" side, but it's not that bad either.

The one professional review that gave it a "low" (7/10) score is IGN and is clear the dude writing that one never actually spent a single second of neuron firing to try and figure out things (one of the most glaring mistakes is he thinks jump range is limited only by the ship, when it is limited by how much fuel you load first, AND THEN your ship's max range).

I'd love a Starfield thread but so many people have me on ignore that me starting it would mean it is not seen at all, something the thread wouldn't deserve. Bar BG3 and Hogwarts (don't think it'll win because implications) it's a solid GOTY contender.

Maybe different tolerances, but I spent like 3 hours roaming around just the first planet and I only left b/c of the popups to "get moving to the next destination" (intro quest).  Compared to Kerbal, for example, the celestial bodies are absolutely *packed* with things to explore, gather, and other challenges (no spoilers).

I was really hoping to see more attention to interesting planetary features like this in KSP 2, but it's too early to say it won't happen.

I don’t have you on ignore. Actually I think your posts have been pretty on point lately. I was just at my wits end and venting a few weeks ago which certainly didn’t further my goal of making this place more substantive and pleasant. So, sorry about that.

It is surprising though to see an RPG lean into surveying and resource collection that way though. I think it also sets an interesting bar for complexity in resource flows for outpost development. There are a LOT of raw resources. I wouldn’t expect KSP2 to have that many because we’re not farming aliens or anything like that, (though farming snacks could be sweet :)  ) but you can see the advantages of having different compliments of elements dispersed on different planets and how that kind of principle could affect colony site selection in KSP2. If you had a site with a good mix of metals, Carbon, He3, and Ice that might be a good place to set up shop. Plus KSP2 adds the layer that equatorial sites are often easier, surface scanning might actually require good polar orbits, etc. it could just be a more hard-boiled version.

I don't think you could be more on the mark here, and I'm hopeful this is the design path Intercept is following.

From the trickles of information we've seen on how extraction, resource shipping routes and colonies will work (and the dude that designed it), it looks like that's what they have in mind (fingerscrossed).  After spending 1000's of hours in MKS/USI, colonies for me, at least, will be the holy grail moment for KSP 2.

We need a lot more content to discover in KSP so exploration is fulfilling. Just having 1-2 anomalies per CB is boring. I really like to play KSP for the adventure and the feeling of discovering interesting stuff on my missions.

Yeah BG starts to get into a slightly more layered approach with special terrain scatter and the impactor experiment was interesting. I think with a small suite of more interesting experiments, being able to drive out in a rover and take core samples, things that drove real design decisions in the VAB and landing puzzles in flight. Its never going to feel like an RPG running around and shooting stuff but the more it leans into things like engineering, LoS communication and sample return and stuff like that the better I think.

... KSP makes a difference. *KSP is a perfectly balanced game with no exploits"-  I will eat my driving licence when this guy shows up in this Forum. Also the reason why i don`t play those mindless timesinks pepperd with violence and drenched in greed.

KSP is the shining light in the dark, dark... darkest void of "space" games, with the most likeable community.

Oh, yeah there is "Orbiter", i know. Realistic and... dry as a desert at high noon

It looks like Unity is changing up their licensing plans. Anyone have any more information and is this going to effect KSP2’s development?

They're walking back the change gradually, but pressure from devs/studios is still on. There's absolutely no justification for the install fee and it's not been well received at all.

KSP2 is in the top list of 2023 games! :joy:

It seems this year has turned out so-so

Well, it was a popular release... until people opened the game.
