Chronologically, Santos Dummont was the third one to fly a machine heavier than air - but, granted, he was the one to do it on a plane that could take-off and land "correctly". And this was the break-trough, because comercial aviation would not be possible without it! The Wright brothers were, in fact, the second ones to fly on a heavier than air craft - and they had the merit of doing an excellent work on the propellers (some "modern" airplanes had propellers less efficient than theirs!) as well on establishing the control surfaces we use until nowadays (besides relying on wing warping, not on control surfaces as we have today) . But since they intended to patent the whole thing, they kept all the flights in secret the most they could to avoid having the idea stolen - a problem that Santos Dumont didn't had, as he did what he did on France exactly to prevent a Patent from being valid on Europe! And now something that not too many people knows: apparently, the real heavy than air craft inventor was German! Gustave Albin Whitehead, and he invented this thing in 1901 (two years before Wright): And the damned thing had (powered) landing wheels and was propelled impulsed but another engine (steam and acetylene). And there're testimonials that it had flighted! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitehead_No._21 Unfortunately, no pictures are available for the deed. Two modern replicas were made in the 80s, both of them flighted (besides using modern replacements for some key elements of the design). Edited June 21, 2022 by Lisias Grammars.
