the software i run today is either old software, or open source software. was not too happy when autodesk bought and killed eagle, so i use kcad now. i still use a 10 year old version of 3ds max and not looking to upgrade any time soon. if i wasnt making do with gimp id be looking into setting up a vm so i can run photoshop 7. i have no desire to buy into cloud-based software.

I haven't slept in like 3 days because I have a really bad cough.

I caugh something that sounds a lot similar almost a month ago. If it's tye same crap, you're in for a load of hurt, because I haven't fully recovered yet and the residual cold seems to drag on and on and flare up the moment I set foot outdoors.

Luckily I recovered mostly.

there was an 8-man construction crew filling potholes on the bridge. seems the vessel contacted the local department of transportation and were able to halt traffic in time. but nobody informed the construction crew. there were 2 survivors.

this situation has made me question the competence of reporters though. one reporter seemed ignorant of the physics involved and tried to blame the construction crew. another claimed that there were 20 casualties. another used the phrase "we still haven't ruled out terrorism". it was clear from the source footage what really happened and they still had to make stuff up.

I think while unlikely terrorism is possible, it hit the support which would take the whole bridge down squarely. It was probably a mistake though.

We also have not yet ruled out:

  • The boat was created out of the imagination of a 4 year old.
  • The bridge support was specifically designed to attract out-of-control ships.
  • The Captain's star sign is Aquarius, whose horoscope today specifically warned against driving ships under bridges.
  • Aliens.

Oh, come on, today's terrorism experts can identify the cause down to a specific group based on newswires and grainy footage before the shooting even stops! *cough* Christo Grozev *cough*

On a less snide note, I do find it weird that the ship ostensibly out of control smashed the support pretty much head-on even though various improvised stopping methods were being used. I understand some of the dynamics are non-obvious, but a layman's perception implies intent.

So of course some people are crying about a Chinese cyberattack while the Russian internet makes memes how it was them all along, as with every manmade disaster in the US in the last couple of years.

i wish reporters were more competent that randos on the internet. having met a few in my life, they are selected for looks not brains.

Apparently the ship lost power, restating what I said before while very unlikely, an intentional cut is possible ruling it out pre investigation is a bad idea. Most likely something went wrong and this was a random occurrence that happened to cause the tragedy.

An example could be if the brakes on a car went out and it looked accidental but would you rule out foul play? What if on the like 1% chance it was especially if lives were taken. Saying we haven't ruled something out isn't saying it's likely it is saying it is possible even if by a hair.

Saying it was anything definitively at this point is a bad idea. A cyber attack is possible IF the electrical systems got exposed to the internet somehow which is well... Unlikely to say the least

I'm gonna wait and see what happens during the investigation

Ya, that's what I was trying to say saying it was blank or wasn't blank with just the video won't do any good.

Ah yes. The kind of guy who eventually learns that "alpha" isn't really the first letter of the alphabet.

An assortment of three-letter acronyms come first.

Just had a coworker leave for another job. It's gonna be rough being down a person for the forseable future. Due to the nature of my work, there is no such thing as 2 weeks notice. We deal with customer data and communications, so once a person says they are on their way out, they are pretty much given their exit interview and escorted out. It took me 2 months to go through hiring. That's not including the time they collected applications.

I JUST TODAY got the reproduction NASA style toggle switches for my KSP instrument panel... Just today... The day after I learn my workload is going to increase 50%, and my free time is probably going to lithobrake into the Mun... :(

I got Covid, imported from Arizona!  For the third time!  And my robotics team's next competition is Thursday, so I'll have like no time to program an autonomous script!  Hooray!!

It could be much worse, though.  On this team, I have the support of many other capable programming peers and mentors who can certainly write a autos, unlike the team I captained where I was the sole programmer and the lead pretty much everything.

General Winter making a last stand?

It's been snowing here all weekend. This is the latest we've seen snow in the 13 years we've been living here.
