Determining most efficient engines?
Superfluous J replied to strider3's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Isp has nothing to do with thrust. Well, not directly. It's literally the change in impulse you get for spending a specific mass of fuel. It's roughly how fast you throw stuff out the back, which will in turn throw your rocket forward faster than an engine with a lower specific impulse. An Ion engine has a really high specific impulse, because it throws a small amount of mass VERY FAST. The probe with an ion engine can therefore have thousands of m/s of dV for very little mass, but takes forever to get going. Eli Manning has a really low specific impulse, because he can throw a much larger mass, but it goes quite slow (at least in rocket terms). He would accelerate much quicker than the probe, but use up all his fuel (the football) very quickly and not actually achieve that much of a change in his velocity. One of the puzzles of rocketry is actually the balance between Isp and Thrust. You want more of both but getting more of one almost always results in less of the other. -
Gravity Assist Planning - Is It Really Possible?
Superfluous J replied to The Flying Kerbal's topic in KSP1 Discussion
With the tools in the stock game, and no outside tools at all? No. You can't. The game simply doesn't support it. With tools like (bare minimum) pencil/paper/math or (ideally) a website, mod, or program that can do the math for you? Sure. No problem. So long as you can perform what the tools tell you is necessary. Source: None other than common sense. I've never tried any gravity assist more complicated than using Tylo to cheapen both Jool arrival and exit. -
Amusingly, letting go as the thing is oriented downwards IS when it's moving backwards the fastest.

Similar boat here. Though I'm only coming on to wish you all well but bow out. I post enough without padding the Lounge with garbage posts.

Mun 0° Longitude Placement vs Moon - Theories?
Superfluous J replied to pquade's topic in KSP1 Discussion
One makes sense It being subjective doesn't mean it didn't happen. Someone with say-so just said so. No one needed to argue anything. I imagine whomever did the art showed it to HarvesteR and he said to put it one certain way and that was it. It's not like you're going to argue with your boss over something that you don't care about. Or maybe it was totally completely random. They loaded Kerbin and Mun in the game and the way they'd set up the Mun orbiting Kerbin, its surface happened to aim it that way. And later, if they ever changed that part they'd obviously rotate Mun because by then any other facing would look wrong. -
Mun 0° Longitude Placement vs Moon - Theories?
Superfluous J replied to pquade's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I apologize. I thought "without further proof" was assumed. As it was not, let me add it. Without further proof (not speculation), I see absolutely no reason to accept any other explanation than this one. -
Mun 0° Longitude Placement vs Moon - Theories?
Superfluous J replied to pquade's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I never said that. I didn't say "I can never see any other point of view." I said "I currently can't see any simpler reason." If you think your theory is more reasonable then hey, I can't convince you. Here's an alternate theory. HarvesteR's mom's birthday was the digits of the rotation of the prime meridian from where it would normally be. That's at least as reasonable as "It's kind of close to where you'd burn to return to Kerbin." -
Mun 0° Longitude Placement vs Moon - Theories?
Superfluous J replied to pquade's topic in KSP1 Discussion
If they cared they'd have made it either a limb or the center line. Someone drew the Mun map. They mapped it to a sphere. They turned it a bit and liked it one way over any other. Rather than edit the map file, they just left the globe turned. I see absolutely no reason to accept any other explanation than this one. It's the simplest and makes sense. Occam's Razor and all that. -
If you do buy the game from Steam though, and are on the current version (and put all your mods there or don't use mods), then copying your save is super easy. Just copy the entire folder of your save and paste it into the same folder in your Steam install. (I own it both on Steam and not on Steam)

Mun 0° Longitude Placement vs Moon - Theories?
Superfluous J replied to pquade's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I think they made the Mun map, then decided what should face Kerbin, and didn't care about the internal number of the meridian because they never told it to the player. -
Thanks I forgot to say that. I forget sometimes how gaping the sar-chasm can be.

The Upcoming Movies (and Movie Trailers) MegaThread!
Superfluous J replied to StrandedonEarth's topic in The Lounge
I'm worried that it'll forever be denied to me as it's on Apple TV. Also, Asimov's books haven't been turned into very good movies, historically. By all means. One of my favorite series. -
Thank you for picking up this torch. Kopernicus is the one and only reason I (and many others) have barely even looked at 1.9 and were kind of lamenting 1.10's impending release.

Well done! If I may critique, your fairing looks like it could have had a smaller cross-section. Maybe even straight vertical from the base. This would make your rocket more aerodynamic and less draggy up front. Though, it looks like you got the launch off without complication so hey And yay for your first interplanetary mission! I'm happy to think I gave you the final little push into the universe.
