That was before my time as a moderator, but as I recall there was some spillage of certain fan threads into the forum at large, and people hating on the fans of some things. Oh, yeah I can imagine how well that work, especially with some fan groups that are prone to getting hate. Thanks! Andem
Before reading this, know that I am not sour or anything due to @Vanamonde removing my semi-political post. I wanted to ask how strictly posts alluding to banned content are moderated, and have SQAUD staff ever had their conent moderated?

It depends on the content, how it was posted, and the perceived intent. Sorry, but there's not a cut and dried answer to that. Several members of the moderation team have received warnings or infractions before becoming mods; after that such things are handled internally. 3 minutes ago, Spaceception said: I asked a question yesterday, It's near the bottom of the 60th page I'm assuming you mean this one (on pg 61 for me): 16 hours ago, Spaceception said: I'm almost absolutely sure this has been asked before.... But there's 60 pages :/ So I guess I have to ask, Why only 25 likes? Pls double them The limit is there to prevent abuse. If it was unlimited then two posters could continuously rep each other and "run up the score". The higher the limit, the more potential for abuse/gaming the system. Personally I would prefer a lower limit (say 10 or so) so that people were fairly choosy about what they rep, but 25 is not too bad.

I'm on these forums a lot (At least the Sci/Space threads) and I like a lot of posts, maybe at least a personal counter that tells you how many you have left? And maybe something to limit how many times you can like a given users post. Edited March 11, 2016 by Spaceception

regex
Is there a way to "contest" or "report" bad moderation? I got dinged for "necromoaning" (not the issue) and then told a nine-month old necro'd thread, ressurrected for the quite obvious purpose of reigniting old tensions, was "still relevant" (the issue). Just to expand on @hoojiwana's response: If you have an issue with a particular moderator, you can always check this thread, which lists all the moderators and what the chain of command looks like: ...so whoever you have a problem with, just go up a notch from there and PM the appropriate person. Moderator -> team leader -> senior global moderator -> lead moderator. If you disagree with the lead moderator, you're out of luck-- the buck stops with Kasper. It's also worth noting that the moderators have a fairly high level of visibility into each others' actions, i.e. we see when someone gets warned. There's a lot of inter-moderator chat and consultation as well, which helps to keep our practices more consistent with each other. So if a moderator were to go "out on a limb" at some point (i.e. take an action inconsistent with the forum rules, or inconsistent with our commonly accepted moderator "best practices"), then the other moderators would likely notice and comment on it anyway. So if you get dinged for something, in general there's a fairly high probability that it's what any moderator would do, and less likely to be the vagaries of an individual moderator. (Of course, that doesn't mean that an individual moderator couldn't make a mistake once in a while-- we're all human! So if you genuinely believe you have an issue, by all means PM the moderator's "supervisor.")

If your post is to explain for other people, please state that so I don't misquote you. This thread is for general interest about "how does moderation on the forum work?", rather than specific issues with specific posts. Although in your case your post happened to be prompted by a specific action, your question is actually a good general one about "what recourse does a player have if there's a question about a moderator's action." Answering that general question is useful to anyone reading this thread. Therefore, in keeping with the topic of this thread, I was responding to the general aspect of your post rather than the specific (tried to make that clear by including terms such as "in general", apologies if I wasn't clear enough). In general, moderators do make an effort to be consistent with each other, and do consult with each other often before taking action. (Not necessarily always, but quite often.) So in general, if a player receives a warning, it's quite often what other moderators would be likely to do, too, not just an individual's judgment. Also, in general: if a player doesn't understand the moderator's reasoning behind a particular warning, the appropriate venue is to private-message the moderator. If that doesn't resolve the issue (for example, if the player takes issue with the moderator's judgment and believes the moderator to be "in the wrong"), then the appropriate venue for that is to private-message the moderator's supervisor, as laid out in the thread that I linked. So if you have a general question of general interest (e.g. "how do moderators make decisions about what action to take?"), this thread is the right place. If you have a specific issue about your personal experience (e.g. "why did I get a warning for my post" or "I disagree with the moderator's judgment of my post"), please take it to a private message to the appropriate person. Thanks!
Mad Rocket Scientist
If I see a post (that is, a reply to a thread, not a new thread) that says "Please delete" or something to that effect, should I report that post?

You should, yes, but it should be the job of the OP to report their own post for deletion, and we can take care of it. If they just make a post, it's not likely we'll see it. Reporting it makes sure we see it every time.
