I am actually trying to get into DCS! I got the F/A-18C module and I'm really digging it, but I'm still struggling a bit with learning the material. I kind of gave up on reading the manual since its so long and kind of hard to digest, but was that a mistake? I would like some tips.

PS: I quoted you from the Feb. TOTM thread but posted this here because I felt like this didn't belong in the TOTM thread.

Oh, sweet! I'm about to start learning the Strike Eagle. I'd love to help you though :D
Nope, not a mistake, haha. As realistic as the manuals are, I don't think I've ever used them; I imagined they are a pain to search through, and you seem to have confimed that. Watching videos is just an easier way to learn the modules you fly (especially 60 second tutorials, gosh people that make those are saints) and that's what I've been doing for years..

Good job. we were indeed getting off topic but you made the right call. :)

@TwoCalories! There's this game called Command: Modern Operations, which is very similar to DCS but you get to create scenarios and stuff for the game to simulate. The US Military or NATO (can't remember) uses it for simulation purposes, but it also has use for us civilians. Here's the link.

Thanks! I'm having particular trouble with landing right now. I'm having a difficult time getting the AOA right and keeping my airspeed up. On my worst attempts I smack into the ocean ahead of the airstrip, and on my best attempts I land extremely roughly on the runway in a way that would probably render the aircraft unflyable IRL and smash into the fences at the end of the runway. Any tips? This is in the F/A-18C by the way.

EDIT: Also, when I use the keybinds to set throttle to idle, they don't seem to do anything. And on my more successful attempts at landing (where I can actually set the aircraft down in one piece initially), pressing W to brake doesn't seem to work. Does it take time to kick in?

Wait, are you not flying with a HOTAS?
I do NOT recommend flying with a mouse and keyboard; even a 30 dollar stick or 70 dollar HOTAS will do the job infinitely better than a keyboard.

For the keybinds not working, I'm not sure. Though I will add that the brakes on combat jets like Hornets are quite ineffective compared to many civilian planes, as they are only designed for landing on long military runways or trapping on carriers and you may not be used that.

Yes, but the HOTAS doesn't have enough buttons for binding things to, so the Wheel Brakes are still controlled via keybinding. Do you have any other tips for landing though?

All the more cynical that it's coming out just behind the wave of official Starship Troopers games.

A month later, this thing appears to be the bomb because it's hitting a lot of the right notes. For example, see the scripted orbital fire support in this clip?

It's not scripted. It corresponds to the actual fire support and reinforcement call-ins by the playerbase on this particular planet. And if this were an Automaton planet and not a Bug planet, some of the superdestroyers would be taken down by enemy fire.

Did I mention automatons? Yes, this game isn't limited to bugs. It also has the Socialist Automatons, complete with red stars, robot Commissars, a sea of bright red tracers coming your way, and all that jazz (techno?) At least the Ministry of Information states they're socialists. And because the game's GMs have currently herded much of the conflict to a jungle planet, everyone is meming hard about Space Vietnam with Terminators.

Yeah, that's true. :P
Cheap HOTAS' don't have nearly as many buttons, let alone hat switches, for proper combat. However, and I'm not sure if you know this or not, but you can use the shift, ctrl, and alt keys to more than triple the keybinds you can have on your HOTAS! that way you can still keep your hands on your it most of the time, only reaching for the keyboard to press modifiers.

As for the landing tips...
I'm thinking we can get each others' Discords and fly together! It will be easier to help you out if we are both communicating in real time, and we can dogfight each other and stuff. But it's up to you :)

I'm just toaster355.

I don't know what level of familiarity you have with flying, so I'll start with the basics:

- When on approach, you should be on the backside of the power curve. That means the controls are reversed; If you are too low, do NOT pull up, keep the nose where it is and add power. Conversely, if you are too fast, do NOT reduce power. Bring your nose up.

- If you are close to glideslope, you should be able to leave the power alone and control your descent angle by pitch.

- Make small inputs, then wait a few seconds for the plane to accept them and settle in the new position.

- Pick a landing spot and aim for it. Once you know you are going to hit it, focus on the far end of the runway to help stay on centreline.

- I would suggest reading the manual, rather than listening to someone else's interpretation of it, but I understand its huge. The one part that I promise will help you is the landing checklists. It makes your brain go through a routine every time you land. You want to make it so you have enough muscle memory you can land while paying attention to something else...like a hypothetical runway incursion, or more realistically in DCS, some combat damage that is affecting the handling of your plane.

Let me know if there is anything specific you need help with. You will get it, its just a matter of getting your brain used to the task. It is complex, but your experience compounds with every failure. Good luck!

I've been meaning to play KSP recently, but I've been quite preoccupied with this. Some of you may remember my old city Dunsfield on this thread. However, in retrospect that city sucked. So I've redone it. Better look, feel, traffic flow, the works. As of writing this, our population is at ~50,000, with traffic flow at a whopping 86%! I'll show the solution after I show you the city.

Now, for this advertised "Ultimate Traffic Solution". The solution isn't some ultimate, complex interchange system, it's this:

Behold, the amazing, wonderful roundabout! That's right, the European solution is the best solution! What do you all think?

Nice S-Bahn.

But the lack of traffic on the roundabouts is conspicuous.

Thank you.

The reason that there isn’t much traffic on the roundabouts is because I have the free public transport policy. People use buses and metros more often than their own cars.

Dug up my C:S save as well. Took a couple of hours to just retrofit it with all the paid mods, the new, higher-capacity trolleybusses that came with the final updates, and scribble down exactly what I so desperately wanted to change. Think I have something to work with without going all the way back to the foundations. Town's having a bit of a death wave, methinks, plus I hope I can power through the various growth stages before my landfills run over, but it's the first step that's the hardest.

I never quite got a feel for how the day/night cycle worked. Especially because the "inertia" of the city seemed to be too great, and the changes wouldn't get noticeable before morning came.

I don't know the game, was thinking realistic. Guess game can have issues here because many games uses short days.
