How to rep "farm".

What if I told you that the objective isn't to gain "rep", but rather to help, inform, and entertain other players? And that any "rep points" you gain are simply a by- product of achieving the *actual* goal?

Yes... YES!!!

Well said, my friend!!!

The only reason mine is so high is I've been writing a story that... weird as it seems sometimes... a lot of people seem to really enjoy. And I could care less about the rep points, I just want my readers to have fun... but the two go hand in hand. And not just me... there's another writer on here with a much higher rep than mine that will probably tell you the same thing... who cares??? It's making people happy that's important... rep will come after on it's own.  ;)

Here are three ways to get rep:

1. Post interesting/Funny/Helpful Stuff instead of Boring/Rude/Non-Helpful Comments.

2. Posting status updates often get 2-3 likes.

3. Probably the most effective way to get rep is by posting a great looking craft and saying: You get a copy of it if you like this post!

I hope this was helpful!

Have a nice day!

Dundun, I never "farmed" rep. I just was a fun guy and I got some. It's not your LIFE...

If the forums get hacked again, we might have more issues with rep. Until then, don't rep farm, just... Be you.

'posts' are how many times you have helped, discussed and learned.

...or annoyed, inflamed, misconstrued, etc..... and let's not forget - derailed the thread topic. ;)

I should get an award for that last one.

Well, along with a couple other posts today, there's the first member to make my ignore list.

(And I reread the rules to make sure that comment wasn't breaking them, while realizing this thread could be violating one of them, but I say that without intending to violate 3.2, just an observation, not a complaint )

Only the first?  16th for me.  ;)

I'd like to have an option to hide your reputation as we used to have in the old forums.

I remember it wasn't possible when people asked back then, but maybe an update has changed things since then. (Pinging @ManeTI because why not)

Hi guys, it looks like there is a setting to exclude groups like "Members" for instance off the reputation system... the other option is to not show the points for all. Anyway both options are beyond me.

There is a reason forums didn't have this sort of thing originally.

1. It would turn into a form of censorship in one form or another. Including censorship via disapproval. This is originally an engineering environment. There is no room for that. Nor is there in any environment.

2. It has no purpose and is completely superficial.

Those are basically the same thing though.

They should really remove all such functions from forums and let arguments stand on their own. There is nothing good to come from a voting system on comments. The idea is disgusting on it's face. It's horrible anyone ever started adopting it. The only thing close to useful in this area is already common in forums. It's called a poll.

Upvoting and the like also increases mindless thinking and similar things. Making people comment instead makes them think a little more and improves the environment. There is nothing to gain from it.

The most important thing is to not add dislikes.

I wonder if it would not be a good idea, given some rules:

  1. Each dislike you apply, costs you 1% of your rep points. No refundable.
    1. So you can't dislike unless you have at least 100 rep points.
  2. Once you dislike the guy enough (let's say, your sum of dislikes for the guy reaches 10% of the reputation of the "victim"), he's automatically added to your Ignore List
  3. The dislike count and list are private to the user that received it (as the warning points).

Such a dynamic would be interesting to watch.

And completely horrifying.   Just like the Stanford Prison Experiment was.

The Stamford Prison Experiment gone throughout the tubes because the "Police" didn't had to pay for their acts.

As soon one have to pay for what he does, you will see peolpe being reasonable. Money talks, people listen.

In God We Thrust. (all others pay in cash)

See that a dislike would cost 1% of the rep points. The more you have, the more expensive it become. Just this would prevent abuse by itself - rep points are valuable around here.

And since dislikes would not be visible for anyone else other than the disliking and disliked (and moderators - this can be a nice tool for helping to sort disputes),  no public shaming to exploit.

Of course, this not a suggestion. Just brainstorming.

Exactly. This is my dark secret when I choose this profile picture. :D

You want to watch vitriol? Just watch Twitter, or Facebook.

I already had plenty from my first thread here. So, thanks. But not thanks. :)

See my previous comments about the matter. You don't need to get jumpy over a mere brainstorming! :)

This is like the Reddit 'Free Karma' thread. Also, someone could hack the site and give everyone major rep.

Wasn't that what they did with Green Iron Crown back in the day?

And on my side, it's not so much about the number, it's about knowing that someone enjoyed what I said. That's a really good feeling to have.

This forum software has dislikes. We turned them off.

By all means, I'm just brainstorming! :D I agree with the fellow Kerbonauts, a public and "cheap" dislike button would be a abuse-storm. :)

I think GIC was an experiment in negative rep that backfired terribly when the forums at large found out about it. Or so goes the legend, anyway.
