i couldn't play that game more than a few hours without rage quitting.  any game where you cannot make any significant progress after 4 hours of play does not respect my time. i want a game not a job.

Isnt that the game with the "lets pay to grind less" mentality? Purchase these suits and ships outright with real world capital or somekind of sub?

I remember being super excited when i saw the trailers and some of the live play. Then i purchased then got really upset. Ill have to look up which game is not uninstalled and hidden on my library but pretty sure it was the newest dangerous series.

Nope. No way to truly escape the grind. Totally free to play after buying the game itself. Suits themselves are bought in game with credits. Unless you get mind blowingly stupid lucky and find a pre engineered suit/weapon (i have a dominator suit that i got stupid lucky to find that was a tier 2 with night vision) and if you do its the ONLY one at that vendor. If you and i see my dominator suit lets say and i buy it first you cant get it. Its gone. They do offer prebuilt ships now but they are not pay to win by any stretch. I have a prebuilt mandalay but i still had to engineer to snot out of it to get it to its current state. But as far as weapons/suits there is no way to bypass the grind. Ya my dominator has night vision (currently trying to unlock one engineer that has that mod) but getting more on it takes this grind. Did i make sense? I hope i did. 200901082025

When I started to self-host my images, I was criticized because (almost) everybody said I wasn't going to keep my site for too long, and it will cripple Forum.

(sigh)

Now Forum is essentially littered with dead links from Discord, and some of the imgur ones are also being lost - but my content is still safe, at least while I'm alive.

Some of the lost images I could find on Archive Org, so the situation is still (mostly) salvageable.

But... Frankly? When people will learn that there's no free lunch, but instead a "socially acceptable" bait and switch tactic applied on the long run?

When I self-hosted all my images it went great, until I decided to give up the whole "have a website" thing and then I had to load all the cached images up on Imgur and re-link them.

The ones I found. I'm sure there are dozens or hundreds that are still broken, all over the dark corners of the Forum (and the rest of the Internet)

I'm afraid you are going to do all of that again, because imgur is deleting images.

A few got mirrored on Archive Org. I'm trying to salvage what I can.

Naw I don't think I'll have to do that again. I'm far less concerned about image links on the forum breaking now, than I was 5 years ago.

And I finally got fed up: since late December 2024 my Steam Deck is behaving craply.

That last 2024 update utterly screwed with my Deck to a point I had to intervene, booting into emergency mode and manipulating the EFI boot partitions in order to recover from the borkage.

When things finally recovered, some well beloved features like using the touchpads to type in the virtual keyboard got royally screwed. Obviously, I was also stuck with OS 3.5.19 because the damned thing plain refuses to update to anything else.

Today I finally managed to have the time and the mood to proper diagnose that damned thing. I had found that it was a BIOS release, F7A0120, that royally screwed things for me. The solution is to rollback to F7A0119 and stay there.

I took the whole day to find the courage to reflash the thing, but I finally just did it. And the thing apparently bricked - it took me some minutes of despair and tears until I remember that I must go to the BIOS settings and reset everything to default, what I finally did and then the thing is working fine again.

Well... Mostly.

When I completely shutdown the Deck, once I turn it on it does the boot, but then goes to sleep mode as soon the Main Screen is shown, what essentially caused me two heart arrests and three attacks, interleaved, until I noticed that the touch pads were responsive and just hit the power button again - what showed the Main Screen waiting for input.

From this point, everything is nominal again - including power cycling it.

Dude... I don't think I'm going to update this damned thing ever again - and just in case, I blocked the BIOS from further updates from VALVe.

I really don't know what in hell they did on FA70120, but definitively whoever pushed this crap trough the doors should be hung by their.... hummm.... never mind.

we still havent had any major snowfall this year, and i live in alaska. some dustings, biggest snowfall melted after only 2 days. weather keeps alternating between wet+cold and dry+colder. this is playing havok with my sinuses.

still haven't used my steam deck for anything more strenuous than super mario 3 (emulated) after one year of ownership. its a cool toy that i have had diminishingly little time to play with. most of that time goes to remapping controls. ive also had problems getting games with native linux builds to run on the thing, for lack of build infrastructure on the deck itself. ive also become extremely aware of my inability to use small format screens, even the fancy oled, without reading glasses.

Fun fact. I was building a reasonably powerful game machine when I got the chance to jump on a basic Steam Deck. Both the Deck and a nice 12GB GPU arrived essentially on the same week.

The GPU is still in the sealed box... I'm essentially doing all my playing (but KSP) on it now. Best thing I ever bought.

On a side node, the OLED screen is overrated. I really prefer gaming late night with the lights off on a LCD than OLED, it stresses way less my eyes, and I never play under direct sunlight (the only use case in which an OLED looks better to me).

Oh, man... what a week.

From dying switches in production, to me rebooting a production server by accident (and not even realizing it for 30 minutes), this last week of January it's something that I definitively could pass without.

From the many unpleasant things that happened, the one that bit more was this one: due some personal projects of mine, I'm using a rpi5 and a 2TB USB3 external drive as storage. Everything is fine, until I realized that my storage was nearly full! Damn, less than 150Gb left, I would not "survive" the final step of one of the projects this way.

So I scrambled to buy another 2TB storage on a store near home, besides knowing I would pay a bit more than buying the thing online.

Oukey, got the last one. It wasn't the model I wanted (better MBTF), but it was good the same (better user support). But the seller tried to scam me, that <piiiii>. Oukey, live and let live.

In the line for the payment, exactly when I did the payment the whole Store lost connection - and nothing was working. Couldn't charge back, couldn't get the invoice - spent almost a hour waiting to be able finish the transation for the damned thing, but eventually I did it. And it was a bit hurtful on the wallet (things here where I live are heavily taxed... (sigh)), obviously.

Come home, finished the day, fixed yet something else on Day Job© that had broke out of the blue and gone bed.

Spent the next day formatting and copying data around (transfering 800GB of data via USB3 still hurts) and reestablished the services. And then I noticed... That I had used only 290GB from the new harddisk, and not the 790GB that was being used by the service on the other hardisk. Did a binary comparison between both datasets, not a single flaw...

Spent about 15 minutes scratching my head until it finally penetrated my dull thick skull: I'm using BTRFS with max compression (ztd:15) on the datasets, both to save space but also access time (less data traveling into the USB bus). And it happened that most of that data was made before I had configured the compression setting (don't ask, I don't remember), and so wasn't compressed.

So I still had about 500GB potentially available on the older hard disk, all I had to do is to recompress everything... #facepalm

Oh, man... what a week.

seems ksp forum stopped working for me. been down seems like forever, but its only been since the 22nd, that the ksp forum has been downed. so today i thought id check reddit, but i clicked on a link to the forum and here it is. i guess the url in my bookmark lacked the "https://" for some reason, and now it works. makes me wonder if it was just me. anyway im back and its over.

Humm... I think your link was using "http" and not "https". It's usual to program the HTTPD to automatically redirect every "http://something" to "https://something", so old links would still work - but, apparently, someone forgot to do that.

That makes sense to be my problem too. I used a bookmark I've had forever and when it stopped working I just figured the forum was down again. After a couple weeks I figured it was down for good. Then bam I try on my phone and it's  fine.

I ended up deleting and re-creating the bookmark and it worked, though I couldn't think why. I don't have the old bookmark to check anymore but that makes sense.
