Game cliches that need to die.

cheevo systems. its a feature implemented for no other reason than because everyone else is doing it. many of them are mediocre and never see much improvement. others are overloaded with impossible cheevos that do nothing more than waste your time.

They can sometimes be fun, but most of the time they end up being a mission that you skip when possible when replaying a game.

Think older games like Morrowind and more so Oblivion messed this up. Having npc who had very low health but was also very aggressive.  Low health was often because how game scaled there the quest  was not scaled but the enemies was. In Morrowind the npc was also very slow. Now this was an benefit later as you could clear the way for them.

Newer games has mostly solved these issues and you have companions rater than npc to escorts. If just for the quest they tend to be pretty tanky and  don't draw aggro, if non combat they redraw or cower in fear.

i think my favoirte escort mission was in soviet strike, where you had to escort one boris yeltsin out of moscow while a coup was in progress. its one of this isometric games where you fly an attack chopper. so you are mostly shooting at tanks and infantry on the ground. of course he had to pull into a drive through and order a burger on his way out while being pursued by armor. and you have to keep the tanks and helis from blowing up the restaurant. of course its an escort mission so you have to hold cracking up until the end if you want to win. i should see if i could find the rom for that game. havent played it since i was 16 or so (sold my saturn and all its games so i could go to my first concert, metallica of course).

He had utterly dreadful munchies. But at least burgers should be quicker than pizza...

Wouldn’t mind escort missions if the escortee didn’t move at a pace halfway between run and walk.

With an controller you can vary the walk speed, not so much on PC. Now you might be faster than standard because of speed buffs but the npc should keep up with you.
Only expectation is if they also has to talk and they need to finish this before something happens.

Since you asked, I will share some of my least favorite game glitches here.

  • For me, this is the worst of the game "glitches" I find irritating and often resorts in me rage-quitting nearly instantly is when there's important NPC dialogue that cannot be heard over the freaking soundtrack! Yes, I know the music is awesome, I get it. But still, there might be something being said by the NPC that's important for me figuring out what to do next, what to look out for so I don't get eaten, or shot at and killed, or not pick up that might be valuable later. But NO, I will never be able to hear it because of the drum beats and the horns and wild musical score that's so loud that I cannot hear what the NPC is saying!  And going in and turning down the music volume works in some games, yes, I know. But there are some games where there's no separate volume for music. There's only ONE VOLUME CONTROL. AHHHH GAMEBREAKING!
  • Games where DLCs are promised to solve certain bugs, such as Civilization VI, so you buy the stupid DLC to find out that out of the ten promised bugs they said the DLC would address, they only solved three but created ten more. Oh, but rest assured, the older nine bugs and five of the newer bugs created by the last DLC will be addressed in the next DLC to be released in MayTM at a cost of $14.95. Oh, and did we say we were going to be adding three new civ leaders, two new modes, too?

when i was playing around with game dev, i always called the kraken the wiggles. the further from your center of the game world you got, the bigger the errors got until they were bigger than your craft. this is what killed my newtonion physics mod for freespace. i couldnt get anything bigger than a small moon into the game.

Seriously, just give me an attack that deals that damage I would have taken during that time and let me move on.

The one thing I hate in video games is that there always seems to be that one mission where all of your guns and ammo and armor are taken away from you, and you have to fight through a horde of [insert enemy type here] with little health and the worst weapon the game can give you.  Why?  What was the point of building up all my skills and upgrading all my weapons if all you're going to do is take them away from me when I need them most?

The necessary ritual humiliation to humble your pride and defeat the vanity.

You should treat the weapon as a gift.
