Cadet Orientation???

Hi!

I was doing a "deep-scan" of the For Science! announcement photos (link below), when I found THIS in one of them! (Circled in blue)

Cadet Orientation?

What is this supposed to mean? Can you share your thoughts on this? I don't know what this could be, and I would love to hear what everyone thinks!

Thanks!

I'll expand on this a bit more.
First Time User Experience, and it's acronym FTUE, just looks kind of awkward. For lack of a better word.
And it looked even worse translated into some of the other languages.
So after a surprisingly long (but fun) discussion, we decided on Cadet Orientation. It sounds a lot nicer.

Yeah no. People aren't going to immediately know what "cadet orientation" means. That much is obvious from the fact the update isn't out yet and it's already confusing people. I'd advise doing away with this obtuse wording cause people so new to the game they're not even done creating their save yet aren't exactly inviting themselves to be bombarded with in-character terminology.

A smooth user experience and labelling things in a clear manner trump "it sounds a lot nicer".

There is a giant box to the right that explains what it is when you click on it. People will be fine.

And that's something I appreciate and thought of when writing that, but I don't think a giant explanatory box is a replacement for being able to immediately understand what something does.

The existence of that box removes my knee-jerk aversion to the term. I think for something you'll wonder about one single time, the way they're doing it is fine.

But just FTR my first thought when I saw "Cadet Orientation" (in the title of this thread. I didn't notice it on the image) was definition 2-b here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/orientation

I think as handy as an explanatory box would be in a game with no labels for anything, it's still not a replacement for just being clear with how you write labels for things.

...which was apparently the problem when internationalization came into play.

Don't need the acronym. For what? Dev's convenience? No player is ever gonna see it anyway.

And there are many synonyms that can be used if it's the localization is where the ekhm, problem is. Just need a creative loc team (many games use crowdin, hint hint)

"Orientation" is the last word I'd use for such thing. I don't mean to sound harsh but once again my dear devs, looks like you're trying to reinvent the wheel, creating confusion.

My guy, a friendly reminder that people usually don't read. They will be asking even when something is in front of their faces. Source: experience with players asking why their buses won't leave the depot for the hundredth time, when the info tooltip with answer is a mouseover away.

How many times have I fielded a question in the Dyson Sphere Program Discord about how to make belts slope up and down. I mean...

I think the issue is that "First Time User Experience" makes people think about drugs. :D

I think it’s kind of funny.  I can only imagine what the Kerbal Space Cadet uniform looks like.  And just think of what it must be like to lead them…

They could just put “(Tutorial)” after to make it more clear if that is really needed. Or just change it to “tutorial” altogether.

Really though, this is pretty low hanging fruit so do you really want them wasting time being perfectionists on things that really don’t matter all that much?

Ya that part of the UX really doesn’t matter.

Keep in mind it is enabled by default. So anyone who turns it off and ignores the giant text box that pops up when they do so AND still complains there is no tutorial is just…. ya.

Relying on a popup to communicate the purpose of a UI element isn't good.
