Dislike Reactions

Why the "like" thing is named "reaction", where there is NO other reactions such as dislike? Also in the "see who reacted" window there are TWO tabs: All and Like, which are ALWAYS IDENTICAL. It looks like the dislikes aren't implemented and are in "beta test" Suggest putting "dislikes" in forum.

It might look like this.

This is just a friendly space game forum. However, imagine if dislikes were enabled, and user X didn't like something that user Y posted, and disliked their post. User Y might take that as an insult and start disliking everything that user X posts, and that could start a negative rep war between those two users.

That could be fun!

Secretly, I would love to befriend a forum user that had -1,000 rep points. That's a fun and interesting person.

I would like them to turn on more, like a laughing one or so, but I agree that we need to leave the dislike one off (if it's even available.)

This forum is pretty much the only place left on the internet that I can come to that doesn't make me angry.  I need to keep it that way.

IMO, the current state it's pretty benefical to keep up a good conservation. It's not really required to repeat the same thing someone else already wrote, just to say 'Yes, that what I want to say as well'. Hitting the like button is way easier and threads will not be 'spammed' with 'agree' post.
On the other hand, if you don't agree or don't like something: write it down and hit 'submit replay' ;) You might end up in a discussion which will help to find a solution for a problem or at least brings up a different point of view for a given situation. If you just hit 'dislike' instead, without bothering to give a reason for this, it will probably just demotivate people to write down ideas or opinions in the first place because nobody want to create a post which will get 20 dislikes but no replies (or at least: I don't want this^^).

The only situation I can think in which a "Dislike" button would be useful is to demote bad behaviours as cheating, stealing/plagiarizing, lying, etc. But for such things we already have Moderation.

Automoderated communities, however, tends to be corrosive when such "dislikes" are cheap. Slashdot works due the (still) huge user base, but a lot of injustices happens all the time - only some became corrected by the good moderators.

The only scenario in which a "disklike" button would be constructive is by being expensive. As a percentage of the reputation - each dislike would drop the reputation by a percentage (5 to 10%). This would refrain people from dislike by revenge or envy, what's the main problem on Slashdot - it's "cheap" to harvest good karma to use attacking people you have a grudge with.

I cannot imagine a single use for a dislike button that isn't some form of "make the person feel bad about their post".

What's essentially the way you make people to proper behave when simply explaining things doesn't works. Try to litter the streets in Japan and you will see it by yourself, as some [fellow citizens of mine] are realizing the worst way.

You should feel bad when you do bad posting. You don't need to be punished every time you mishap, but you should feel bad by doing it. It's what will make you remember to do not do it again in the future.

I also cannot imagine that the forum would be improved by making people feel bad about posting.

Problem is… Some people is feeling bad by posting on the forum sometimes. Now and then people gets out of line on others, and Moderation needs to act to keep things right. You can bet your SAS :P that the people being moderated by bad behaviouring ends up feeling bad no matter how well Moderators try to handle the situation - it's how we have our brains hardwired, people would not be able to live on a Society if they would not be annoyed when doing "bad things", as we just would repeat that until the end of the social cohesion.

In every community, people will feel bad on it sometimes. The choice we have is to decide if the people feeling bad would be the good behaviouring ones - or the bad ones.

This is life. You can't be shielded from life and have a good one at the same time.

Yes but you should not feel bad when you just post an opinion that a bunch of people who are too afraid to reply can simply downvote.

If you truly disagree with someone enough to react, you should articulate what you don't like about what they said.

I couldn't agree more. It's the reason I don't support this feature here.

We don't have a reliable mechanism to prevent abuses other than Moderation - that renders such feature unneeded at first place. :)

People con downvote if they don't understand, fan groups can downvote when their object of adoration is being criticized, any otherwise harmless post could trigger a downvote. One could even downvote just because it has been a bad day.

Imo upvotes are a means to improve quality, like an incentive one gets when being nice. Downvotes otoh can suppress reasonable conversation. No downvotes please :-)
