[1.8.x+] Strategia [v1.8.0] [2019-10-22]
Grenartia replied to nightingale's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I know this post is itself, a few months old, but apparently, Leosky hasn't even logged in since last December, and its nearly October now. -
What's your most controversial KSP opinion
Grenartia replied to Zum of all trades's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Hill I'll die on: MechJeb is actually great, and people shouldn't be shamed for using it. There's nothing MJ can do that I also can't do. I literally went to school for rocket science, I've done all the math with real world figures, and I've done it manually in-game, too. But MJ removes the tedium. Its like doing long division by hand vs doing it with a calculator. Should you know how to do long division? Yes. Does that mean calculators are bad? No. Just because you know how to do something manually doesn't mean you always should if you have the means to automate it. The automation just saves time and effort for other tasks. Its still useful to know how to do it manually, in case the automation messes up somehow. To use the division example, its good to know that 52 divided by 5 is 10.4, that way, if you accidentally type 5 divided by 52 in your calculator and get 0.096 and some change, you know something's gone wrong and can fix it. Maybe I don't want to babysit my keyboard for a gravity turn this time. Or maybe I want to make some popcorn while MJ does the rendezvous and docking for me. That's not a bad thing. -
Rational Resources 3.0.2 [Sep 24, 2024]
Grenartia replied to JadeOfMaar's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yeah, I spent last week basically binge playing Satisfactory, and the week before that in a streamer's skeleton crew, so RN I'm just catching up on what I've missed here. I'll start up the game either later on tonight or tomorrow, and let you know.- 1,062 replies

The reason it probably flew under the radar is because it doesn't get talked about much, and probably because it isn't on CKAN or on Spacedock.

Well, that's the thing. Nobody seems to be mentioning Vortex at all. Except for you. Its my understanding that CKAN doesn't touch manually-installed items. But again, you're missing my point, which is that its a lot easier to correct an installation issue caused by CKAN than by manual install. And installation issues are a lot less frequent through CKAN than manual. The CKAN team are not God, they are not all-knowing or all-powerful, so it is on the user and the mod dev to report issues to them. So I'm not understanding your point. And as one of your users, I appreciate that ethic. My question wasn't "why do you support Nexus/Vortex?", it was "how are they installing your mods with it in the first place?"
-
I'm present on the subreddit. I'm present in multiple discord servers. I'm present here. Here is by far the most comprehensive place for support, even in spite of the downtime issues. As far as I can tell (granted, I'm no dev), the issue isn't with CKAN as much as it is with the mods. Either the planet packs themselves, or their dependencies. Install issues happen regardless of being done through CKAN or manual. I've dealt with install issues through CKAN, and with manual installs. Un-borking an install is much easier with CKAN than a manual install, so I really don't see what your complaint is. No matter how you slice it, its far easier to uninstall and reinstall a mod to rectify a borked install when using CKAN vs doing it manually, so the friction argument is still in CKAN's favor. And I really don't see how Vortex is a threat on that front, especially since it only seems to support 10 mods at most (vs the literal thousands on CKAN), and most of them for game versions that predate 1.8.x (to say nothing of 1.12.x). As an average user, I'm forced to ask myself why I'd switch to it when it sounds like an entirely downgraded experience compared to CKAN, and I don't even have any assurance that it would be better than CKAN in the one area you're concerned about.

All I'm saying is, the overwhelming majority of the playerbase (at least that I've seen) loves CKAN and hates manual installation. And considering this is literally the first time I'm hearing about Vortex, and as plugged in as I am here and other places in the community, I feel reasonable in saying most people haven't heard of it, either. The only alternative I'm aware of is that one used by Curseforge, and as far as I'm concerned, its bloatware at best, and outright malware at worst. Maybe the reason you're getting support requests from people using it is because nobody seems to support it at all? I don't see it listed in any mod's forum page, or on their spacedock page, or on their githubs. Not even yours. Edit: Yeah, just looked it up. Apparently its CKAN for Nexus mods? Only 13 files listed under KSP, 3 of which seem to be craft files from like, 10 years ago, most of the files haven't been updated since before 2020, and some are mods you can also get on CKAN, or have duplicate functionality with mods you can find on CKAN. The most liked one hasn't been updated since release in 2013, and only has 68 likes (using that as a proxy for individual users, since raw downloads doesn't account for one user downloading multiple times). And none of your mods are there, so IDK how anyone is asking you specifically about support for Vortex.

All I'm going to say is, as an end user, manual installs SUCK. CKAN makes it easy (i.e., path of least friction). Its so frictionless, in fact, that if I can't get the mod on CKAN, I won't install it at all. I've been burned too many times by manual installs, like nested gamedata folders, or complicated dependency relationships. I don't know what your beef is with CKAN, but its not on behalf of users, because most of us seem to agree its the best way to install mods.
-
Yeah, I gotta agree with Jonny here. CKAN does a lot less erroring than manual, and 1.8.x usually works flawlessly on 1.12.x unless there's some sort of conflict with a different mod.

Yeah, I haven't seen any settling down of the issue, either.

Honestly, Rabaul. Gave you a little bit of everything. My least favorite was that damned B-17 mission. And yeah, American fighters generally had peashooters, but I did do it at least once for realism. The rocket sniping was with the Meteor, IIRC.

@JonnyOThan would know.

Yeah, it'd be nice to see an update for this. -
I, for one, can't wait to do a Jamestown base.

God, I loved playing this as a kid. I also had it on the Wii, and I'd do maniac things like flying underneath bridges and the Eiffel Tower, landing on enemy airfields in the middle of a dogfight, sniping enemy fighters from beyond gun range with rockets, etc.
