As an example, at this point in time I am able to devote a few hours per day to moderation duties. If work or family commitments change and I need to back out of my moderation duties, I am able to do that. My take is, again, it's not a life sentence to be assigned as a moderator. We all have lives, both personal and professional outside of our moderator duties. When life happens, sometimes time commitments have to be adjusted. On those days I'm usually available for 3-5 hours. However, the time spent actually doing moderation is much less. Most days there's maybe an hour spent actually moderating anything- y'all are remarkably polite for the most part. I think it's a matter of people putting time into something they care about. Every moderator I ever worked with cares a great deal about this community. In a similar way, some great individuals put their time and energy into making mods, writing stories, creating beautiful artwork to share with others etc. These are all different ways of giving something back to the community. Depends on the day or Month or Year. As a mod, I'm on the forums most days when I'm on my computer, but occasionally I'll step away for a couple few weeks on a whim just to not get burned out. I try to stay active on the forums if there's a thread that interests me, but usually I'll just lurk.
