A few weeks ago, while on the Facebook page, Kerbal Space Program, someone asked about the various educational levels of those on the page. Taking a page from Endermens' book, I decided to start this thread. How many times have you seen someone's user name, a ship they've designed, or even a comment they've made and wondered what their degree is in? Well, wonder no more (for those who choose to participate)!

Have you earned your college degree? Do you hold a trade school certificate or other vocational training certification? Are you a starving undergraduate or graduate student and plan to someday graduate? Did life smack you between the eyes and you had to leave college for a job - we've got a category for that! If you are planning to go to college, I even have a category for that as well...

In high school I didnt know what I wanted to do with my life, but the student councilors would not stop bugging me to pick a school. I lied and told them I wanted to join the military so they would stop annoying me about further schooling. Not everyone knows what they want to do with their life, right out of high school.

My best friend went to school to be a pilot, then changed his mind more than halfway through and switched to being a chemistry teacher, then changed his mind halfway through and switched to a culinary/business management degree, and now has crippling debt because flight school was 40k+, his other schooling combined add up to another 40k as well.

Now a half-decade removed from high school I know I want a degree in ancient history, Rome in particular, but I am not sure what to do. I want to go to school just so I can learn more, and I can do that now for free.

I want that degree just to have it.

I don't want a job in a museum. I don't want to teach history. I don't want my interest or hobby to become a career.

So I plan to go to school in maybe 30 years, just to say I did it. maybe not 30, but in the distant future at the least.

Anyone understand where I am coming from here?

There is nothing else I am passionate enough about to justify spending the money on schooling.

I understand completely. I started my career in history out for the exact same reason but focused on Greece and Rome on the advice of my unofficial adviser, Thomas Jefferson. If you want, I could recommend a few great books about Greece and Rome, which are normally studied together because of the similarities. Money spent on education is never a bad investment as long as you don't get a degree in general studies... To be honest, I teach at a community college but didn't need the Ph.D. to do that; it is simply the degree I wanted, so I completely understand.

I A'd or B'd all tests in high school without much prep. I could always figure out what the tester wanted.

I had a fairly rude awakening when going into college. It turns out knowing stuff is actually important! I was never able to actually devote full-time to school, what with needing to eat sometimes and sleep somewhere other than a cardboard box, so I always worked full time and went to school part time. That plus my natural tendency toward laziness and procrastination spelled my doom in college.

I was "undecided" until my counselor berated me into picking a major. I picked math, as that was what I was best at. I hated those classes, so switched to electrical engineering to hopefully put my talents to more practical use. I hated that, so switched to computer engineering which I also hated, and finally settled on computer science, where I rocked at the CS classes (when I showed up) but was miserable (both in production and outlook) at everything else.

One day, an online friend who I'd never met in person but happened to live in the same city offered me a job. I took it, and started making more money than people who were graduating with CS degrees were making. I played at staying in school but after about a year dropped out. That was in the 90s and I've never looked back.

As for me, I am in secondary school, with little idea what to do. I'd love to be in physics of some sort and am intrigued quite a bit by quantum mechanics. My father would be delighted if I'd continue his company, but I'm not sure about studying hydraulics... I've got the math and science grades for it, but English, history and geography is nowhere near my interests, and my grades for those show exactly that. Why do you need to learn "great Shakespearean literature" to go in to quantum physics or any field of the sciences anyways? I know it's to get a "Well rounded education", but I already know I'd like to be in the sciences, and doubt I'll reference much of it. I suppose I have a few more years, but that's not such a long time. Back to the maths and sciences, I almost never study, and have a firm grasp of those concepts. I honestly don't understand why Trig wasn't taught in elementary school. There are three simple functions that are easy to understand; sin(o/h), cos(a/h), tan(o/a)n. My math classes never divided in to decimals until until grade seven, while I did it in five. We only did remainders beginning grade six! They praise Canada for it's great education system, but really, it's not (in my opinion).

I nearly never get along with people my age, or even adults! There are very few people I can have an intellectual conversation with. Every male teen my age practically speaks an obscenity every five words. Are they really that stupid that they have such a small vocabulary?

High-school drop-out, joined the Army, then went back and got an asst degree in accounting and another in computers. But I didn't drop out because I didn't like school... I left because I was a straight-A, advanced in every class, but moved and got put in a school that said they wouldn't let me graduate early, saying it's not fair to the lazy kids!!! I was all set to graduate a sophomore... then the new highschool said no... I hated that school!!!

- M.F.A., Superior School of Fine Arts, Strasbourg, France (2005). Focus : Art (video).
